Ammolite: The Rainbow Coloured Gemstone
The Mysterious Ammolite Gemstone
At KORITE, we believe every gemstone tells a story—and few are as mesmerizing as Ammolite. Known for its kaleidoscope of colours and fascinating history, Ammolite is one of Earth’s rarest and most beautiful treasures. Recognized as an official gemstone in 1981, it has captivated collectors, jewellers, and spiritual seekers alike. If you’re drawn to gems with extraordinary origins and unparalleled beauty, Ammolite belongs in your collection.
A Prehistoric Legacy Encased in Stone
Ammolite comes from the fossilized shells of Ammonites — ancient marine mollusks that thrived in prehistoric oceans when Earth’s continents were still a single landmass. These creatures vanished during the mass extinction event 66 million years ago, but their legacy lived on in the unique conditions of southern Alberta, Canada.
Over millions of years, the shells of Canadian Ammonite species transformed into vibrant gemstones through a rare process of mineralization with aragonite. The result is an iridescent stone that reflects nearly every colour of the rainbow, shimmering with light and energy.
For centuries, Indigenous peoples of the Blackfoot Confederacy revered these colourful fossils as sacred “buffalo stones,” believed to bring good luck, prosperity, and protection.
Where Ammolite is Found
Ammolite is found exclusively in a small region of southern Alberta, within the Bearpaw Formation—the only known deposit of gem-quality Ammolite in the world. Even here, only 3-5% of Ammonite fossils possess the vivid colours and structural integrity to be considered true gemstones, making Ammolite even rarer than diamonds.
The gem’s value is influenced by its colour range and intensity, with blue and violet being the most prized and rare. Each stone is completely unique, offering a one-of-a-kind spectrum that makes every piece of Ammolite jewellery a singular work of art.
The Many Faces of Canada’s National Gemstone
Ammolite’s allure lies not only in its brilliant colours but also in its extraordinary patterns—each formed naturally over millions of years. No two stones are alike, and the variety of patterns makes every piece of Ammolite truly unique.
At KORITE, we’ve identified and celebrated some of the most captivating patterns, including:
- Dragonskin — bold, scale-like segments reminiscent of a mythical creature’s hide.
- Stained Glass — intricate, fractured designs that sparkle like a mosaic.
- Cobblestone — rounded, pebble-like textures.
- Feather — fine, delicate striations like the barbs of a feather.
- Moonglow — soft, ethereal, cloud-like effects.
And these are just a few of the remarkable patterns found in Ammolite. To discover more about these rare and beautiful natural formations, read our full guide to Ammolite patterns here.
