Unearthing Wonder: A Day at the KORITE Mine

The Bearpaw Formation is a window to ancient oceans, rich with ammonite fossils transformed into vibrant Ammolite. This formation holds not just geological value but also cultural significance for the local Indigenous communities who have long revered these ancient stones.

Mining ammonite isn’t simply about uncovering fossils—it’s an exploration that demands precision. Geologists and miners work hand-in-hand, carefully peeling back layers of ancient rock to reveal these delicate treasures. Each layer unearthed tells a new story of tectonic shifts, geological pressures, and nature's patient artistry, recorded over 71 million years.

Join us behind the scenes at our Alberta mine, where every day brings new discoveries—each fossil a glimpse into Earth’s prehistoric past with each layer a chapter waiting to be discovered.

The Rhythm of the Day: A Look at Life in the Mine

A typical day at the mine begins early, as teams head out before sunrise to take advantage of the natural light. Equipment is meticulously prepared, and every action—whether it’s analyzing the ground or lifting a fossil—requires careful coordination. Our team works as a family here and every discovery feels like a shared victory.

Beth Day Chief, co-founder of Buffalo Rock Mining, reflects on these moments as deeply meaningful. “When Tracy and I first started, it wasn’t just about extraction—it was about building something sustainable for the future, for our community, and for the generations that come after us.” For Beth, the land holds not only Ammolite but also memories, connections, and possibilities.

Precision Meets Exploration: Mining Ammolite with Purpose

Mining ammolite requires more than digging—it’s an act of exploration. Each layer of rock holds the possibility of uncovering something extraordinary, but it takes skill, patience, and respect to unearth these delicate fossils. Alberta Ammolite is fragile, and the excavation process is slow and deliberate, using tools designed to minimize damage.

There’s a rhythm to the work. Layer by layer, our team works together to uncover each fossil that is millions of years old. It’s humbling to be part of that process.

Our mining team works with a blend of precision and curiosity, knowing that every discovery—whether a fragment or a fully intact ammonite—reveals more of Earth’s ancient story.

The People Behind the Process: Passionate Stewards of History

For the KORITE team, the mine is more than just a site of work—it’s a place of purpose and passion. Many of our miners have spent years honing their skills, developing not only technical expertise but also a deep connection to the land.

"Each fossil is a reminder of our role as caretakers," explains Tracy Day Chief, Co-Owner. "Finding a perfectly preserved Ammonite still feels like opening a time capsule."

This dedication ensures that the Ammolite unearthed at KORITE’s mine makes its way into jewellery collections, museums and homes worldwide while staying true to its origins in ancient seas and Indigenous heritage.

Responsible Mining: Restoring the Land for Future Generations

KORITE’s mining philosophy goes beyond gemstones—it’s about minimizing environmental impact and restoring the land once mining is complete. When a site is finished, we work to return it to its natural state, ensuring the landscape can thrive once again.

“Restoring the land is a responsibility we take seriously,” says Tracy. “We want to make sure the land stays healthy for the communities that depend on it, now and in the future.”

Our partnerships with local communities further reinforce our commitment to ethical mining practices, fostering mutual respect for both the environment and the people who call this land home.

    A Continuous Journey of Discovery

Ammolite’s story goes beyond just geology; it weaves together history, tradition, and innovation. Each gemstone carries the essence of a prehistoric world, holding the remnants of ancient ammonites that once swam in seas that have long disappeared.

Today, KORITE is dedicated to sharing these incredible stories, making Ammolite not just a beautiful gemstone but a piece of history that everyone can appreciate.

As the day winds down and the last rays of sun hit the mine, the team gathers to share stories and reflect on their discoveries. “We’re not just mining a stone; we’re part of something larger,” Tracy shares. This camaraderie and passion for discovery fuel KORITE’s commitment to preserving the beauty of Ammolite for generations to come.
